  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk (or almond/soy milk)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup red candy melts
  • Black licorice laces for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and sugar.
  3. In another bowl, cream the softened butter and remaining sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  4. Gradually combine the dry mixture with the wet mixture, alternating with milk until smooth.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner two-thirds full with batter. Bake for 18–20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Allow cupcakes to cool before frosting generously with white frosting.
  7. Melt red candy melts as per package instructions; dip licorice pieces into melted candy and press onto the frosted cupcakes as Santa's boots.
