Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (480g)
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast (6g)
  • 1 cup warm milk (240ml)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (100g)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (113g)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruits (raisins, currants, candied citrus peel) (150g)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (almonds or walnuts) (60g)
  • 2 large eggs
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk with active dry yeast and sugar. Let it sit until foamy (about 5 minutes).
  2. In another bowl, combine all-purpose flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Create a well in the center.
  3. Melt butter and allow it to cool slightly. Add melted butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir until you have a sticky dough.
  4. Lightly flour your work surface and knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Gently fold in dried fruits and nuts without overworking the dough.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap or a towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (1-2 hours).
  7. Punch down the risen dough gently and shape it into an oval loaf; fold one side slightly off-center.
  8. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Cool completely on a wire rack before dusting with powdered sugar.
