- 2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1½ cups Gruyère cheese (shredded)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Fresh thyme (or dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
- Thinly slice the potatoes (about 1/8 inch thick) while the onions cook.
- Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish, followed by half of the sautéed onions, then season with salt and pepper.
- In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream and thyme. Pour half over the potatoes and onions.
- Repeat layering with remaining ingredients, finishing with cheese on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil after 30 minutes to allow cheese to bubble and brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
